Transformable building structures in architectural engineering education

In the last decade, various types of transformable building structures have been developed, such as deployable tensegrity, scissor-like and origami-inspired systems, well reconfigurable rigid-bar linkage adaptive compliant structures. The development systems owns to advances in material design kinetics, while aiming at an improved sustainability built environment. Their conceptualization investigation enabled through associative parametric numerical analysis facilities that meanwhile provide robust digital visualizations models. principle, responsive are capable adapt changing functional, loading, or environmental conditions. At university level, integrated architectural involves integrative form, functions technical system parameters is increasingly enriched by performance-based approaches interdisciplinary experimentation design-driven research, i.e., ‘integrated design’, for achievement efficiency, technological innovation architecture. paper discusses related influencing modes preliminary results approach driven aspects modularity, flexibility, transportability, deployability, adaptivity interactivity, their implications towards a framework research. projects presented supervised authors recent years University Cyprus Stuttgart. all cases, methodology followed enables students consider morphological, functional structural requirements, being exposed materiality, functionality, aesthetics.
